How to get my C drive to show up in my Device Manager/Open ?

Ok, so I read the helpful info your website gives about the CD drive not opening, and how to open the command prompt to delete autorun.inf. Unfortunately, not only will my drive not open, it's not even showing up on the Device Manager. I've read all over the web about uninstalling the driver and re-installing it. There has been absolutely no helpful info about these two issues coinciding with one another anywhere on the internet it seems.

I downloaded the free iolo System Checkup, but did not buy the software because it will mess with my registry, and I've read on basically every website to not download something that messes with the registry in any way, shape or form (it scanned over 2000 registry errors). However, the free scan did detect that my C drive was corrupted. So close, yet so far away from a fix.

Anything you know would be helpful!

I'm running on Windows XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 3
