Problem with my transcend 320GB external hard disk ?

My laptop is able to detect my hard disk...But everytime i plug it in a message sayin "You need to format your hard disk before you can use it" is being displayed...Im not able to access my data in the hard disk...I have 300GB of data...Is there a way to fx this problem? Can anyone help me?
