While creating a recovery disc (for HP Pavilion Laptop), is the Serial No. also stored in the disc?

My hard disc recently cashed and I had to replace it. It seems however that the recovery DVDs were not correctly written. My friend has the exact same model, and he stays very far away now, so can I use them to recover my HDD?
