question about word 2007 not saving correctly ?

when I save a file in word 2007 it saves with docx extension, but opens as if it were a doc extension. So opens like an older windows document. IS there a way to fix this? The default setting is to save as docx. When I open through Windows 2007 it works, but if I open directly from the file it opens in the old format.
