how to change how my pc automatically opens files ?

I accidentally sent my dell to open all downloaded files as a pdf in adobe reader. now when i try to open .doc files online it won't let me open them in microsoft word. how do i change the settings so that i have the option to use the appropriate program for each file i want to open?
