Broadband on xp tower gives a message that it is disconnected. but the wires are connected. ?

Please somebody help!!!!! I have checked all wires, they are connected . I have unplugged every thing for the night and it didn't work. i have reset the modem. I have tried to restore to an earlier day. it didn't work. At&t said it was the computer, not their equipment. so what can i do to fix it?
