Microphone strange Problem... ?

Please help me out..... i am facing a very strange problem. My microphone doesn't work at all. When i tried using the sound recorder its not working but when i played a song from my computer .. sound recorder started recording that sound. The sound is being recorded internally.

Is this because of the problem with sound driver, windows settings or problem with the jumper settings in mother board.

Plzz.... plzzz .. give me a solution...
