Please insert disc into drive d: message ?

On wednesday last both of my dvd drives started coming up with this message "Insert disc into drive" even though a disc had been inserted.
I run xp to service pack 3. One drive is a sony optiarc ad7201a, the other a samsung writemaster.
I have updated the firmware to no avail. I have reinstalled both drives, but no joy.
Not long before I had cleaned the registry with ccleaner by piriform. Is that the problem?
I don't think it is anything to do with an ide fault as the HDD is working fine on the same channel. It seems unlikely the drives are faulty as they both failed at the same time.
Any help out there?
