Sounds like you have run out of disk space, which windows should have warned you prior to this happening.
First, may I suggest that you check all programs, routines and games and uninstall anything you
don't use and almost never look at. Keeping things on the system 'just in case I may need them' is not advised unless you have a good sized Hard Drive (or Drives) installed. You should have a backup drive for all the master programs stored away somewhere for that sort of thing.
Next. Having removed all un-need software, run a good de-fragger. Windows own is not really up to it.
Use VOPT or a free util which is listed in this forum called DeFraggler. It should solve the problem.
However, install a really big Hard Drive to take care of you current and future needs. There's never enough space.
Hope this helps

As your computer freezes at the time of checking disk....Generally your harddisk is having badsector... this problem can be solved using reinstalling OS or boot your PC throgh third party bootable disk.

I am recommended following Trobleshooting bootable operating system which can be run through bootable CD,

1. "Hiren boot-CD"
2. "Ultimate boot-CD"

Using above bootable application, you can run disk doctor or bad sector recovery tool or disk doctor tools. It might repair your system.
